The Declaration for the Safeguarding of Intangible Culture Heritage for Climate Action approved by the ICH NGO Forum on 6 June 2024 recommends policies and action steps to address the threats to intangible cultural heritage from climate change. It makes the case for prioritizing climate change in the ICH Convention, indicating the immediate and ongoing damage to cultural practices as well as traditional knowledge and practices that foster resilience.
The Declaration was approved by the Forum by a vote of 66 to 1 with 4 abstentions and discussed by representatives of the ICH NGO Forum at the Expert Meeting on Living Heritage and Climate change convened by the ICH Secretariat on 19 – 20 June.
The Guidance note on Climate Change, the official working document for the meeting, cited the Declaration and included some of its recommendations.
